Local culture cravers know that it wouldn't be a real Vegas holiday without "A Christmas Carol" at Lawry's. There's something about experiencing this story over a meal in an intimate setting that truly reminds us how good it feels to be there for one another.

Brandon Klock and James Heim are the co-directors of the experience December 1st through 5h at Lawry's The Prime Rib - Las Vegas, 4043 Howard Hughes Parkway, Las Vegas, NV, 89169. (702.893.2223). We asked cast member Narée Asherian to interview them about their company, EJG Productions.

NARÉE ASHERIAN: What is EJG Productions' mission?

EJG PRODUCTIONS: EJG Productions is a non-profit theater organization, focused on bringing fresh, innovative, and thought-provoking performances to the Las Vegas arts community. In a city already rich in culture and entertainment, we hope to develop and support new works, celebrate classics, and use our resources to make them available to everyone through outreach and education programs.

NA: How did you get started with A Christmas Carol?

EJG: Brandon Klock has directed and produced A Christmas Carol for 11 years. This is James Heim’s first year coming on board as co-director.

NA: What makes the way EJG puts on A Christmas Carol unique?

EJG: Lawry’s The Prime Rib is a unique setting to put on A Christmas Carol. In addition to the amazing meal that is served during the show, we perform in the round so every audience member gets a unique view from their table. Some audience members even get a chance to interact and dance with the cast during part of the show.

NA: What advice would you give new audience members seeing the show for the first time?

EJG: Come with an empty stomach, lots of Christmas spirit, and enjoy the show!

NA: What do you want people to know about the show?

EJG: Our cast and crew is made up of a lot of really talented local performers who work hard to put on a great show. You will see many of the cast members playing multiple roles as part of the overall ensemble.

Though most of our cast returns year after year (such as our Scrooge, Ken Kucan, who has been with us since year one), we’re excited to have three new actors making their EJG debut (Luke Herrmann as Tiny Tim, Joshua Meltzer as Jacob Marley/ Ghost of Christmas Present, and Spencer Debenham as Young Scrooge/ Fred). Also, many of our patrons are returning guests who come to see the show every year. It’s become a bit of a tradition for some. We hope it’ll be the same for you!

NA: What would you tell creatives looking to get involved with EJG?

EJG: Reach out! We are looking to grow going in 2020 and beyond. We’d love to hear from you!

NA: Where can we go to see current show information and get updates on future projects?

EJG: We’re on Instagram and Facebook (@ejgproductions), so make sure to follow along our creative journey!

EMAV Review: Vegas Theatre Co. serves up a delicious mystery with 'Holmes & Watson' ★★★★

    ★★★★☆ - Delicious

What is it about mysteries that we love so much? The satisfaction of cracking the case? The fun? The challenge? Or the sense of accomplishment when you reach the end? Well, you’ll need all your wits about ya’ to even come close to solving this one (in 85 minutes). The game is afoot, at Vegas Theatre Company.

Sherlock Holmes has not been seen for more than three years and is presumed dead following his confrontation with Moriarty at Reichenbach Falls. Dr. Watson is called upon to disprove the many frauds, fakes and charlatans who have popped up claiming to be Holmes. Suddenly…a newspaper clipping arrives… and, we’re off!

Playwright Jeffrey Hatcher’s ingenious new thriller, Holmes & Watson, received its World Premiere at Arizona Theatre Company in 2017, and gets its Vegas premiere featuring strong and very capable ensemble members.

Marcus Weiss is both a classic and formidable Watson, accepted and trusted in the role from the outset as the person closest to Holmes – and his friend -- Watson is engaged to discover which of the three Sherlock Holmes(es) is the real one. Daz Weller plays Dr. Evans -- the man who has taken it upon himself to solve the case of The Three Sherlock Holmes and has requested the aid of Watson.

Geo Nikols is Patient 1, the first of the three Holmes to be interviewed. He presents the demeanor we expect of Holmes, but is brusque and rather forward with Watson -- and extremely volatile. Christopher Brown is a scruffy, wild-looking Patient 2, who is restless and exhibits the skeptical nature of Sherlock (and wears a straitjacket). Jonas Woolverton is Patient 3, whose head is shaved, does not speak, nor does he appear to hear. His gaze is always forward as he seems to be in a catatonic state.

Maythinee Washington is the prim, chilly Matron. Bryan Todd is The Orderly, one of Dr. Evans’s assistants.

To reveal more would spoil the bombshell revelation. Suffice to say Hatcher's engaging drama keeps the audience guessing. That’s truly all that can be told without giving away the tumultuous twists, turns and corkscrews of this plot. A plea arrives from a mental asylum on a lonely island off the Scottish coast. The doctor in charge reports having not one but three Sherlock Holmes(es) in his care -- or rather, inmates who claim to be him. Can Watson help sort it out -- and is there a chance one of these mysterious men might be the true Holmes?

Briskly directed by Andrew Paul this suspenseful thriller is a thoroughly entertaining production. Ellen Bone's temperamental lighting fits the mood changes throughout and balances Angela Baughman's dark and stormy sound effects. The action unfolds smoothly on set designer Daz Weller's dungeon-like 12th century fortess and costume designs by Hailey Eakle genuinely reflect the period.

Join the Baker Street Irregulars in this dynamic new installment to the never-ending saga of Sherlock and Doctor John through December 8th at Art Square Theatre, 1025 S 1st St #110, Las Vegas, Nevada, 89101.

Jeffrey Hatcher is one of Minnesota’s premier playwrights. Regionally, his plays have been performed at Yale Rep, Old Globe, South Coast Rep, Seattle Rep, Intiman, Florida Stage, The Empty Space, CTC, Madison Rep, Illusion, Denver Center, OSF, ASF, Milwaukee Rep, Repertory Theater of St. Louis, Cincinnati Playhouse, Cleveland Playhouse, ATL, Philadelphia Theater Company, Coconut Grove, Asolo, City Theater, Studio Arena and dozens more in the U.S. and abroad. He is a member and/or alumnus of The Playwrights’ Center, the Dramatists Guild, the Writers Guild, and New Dramatists.

Hansel and Gretel with Opera Las Vegas

“Hansel and Gretel may be the world’s favorite fairy tale opera, and it is certainly the most tuneful,” said Opera Las Vegas General Director Jim Sohre, who should know.

The 28-strong OLV Youth Chorus, who are highly enthused about the melodies and dramatic twists and turns. Sohre added: “The chorus will first play guardian angels, and then, in the finale, the lucky children who get redeemed from being frozen in time as the Witch’s gingerbread cookies.”

Opera Las Vegas is reviving their production of Engelbert Humperdinck’s beloved classic version of Hansel and Gretel (in English) just in time for the holiday season.

    Windmill Library Theatre

7060 West Windmill Lane, Las Vegas, NV, 89113

Hansel and Gretel will be performed in a special 75-minute, one act adaptation by Jack Gaughan, and will be conducted by Ioannis Protopapas, a doctoral student at UNLV’s School of Music, who successfully helmed the music for OLV’s 27. Protopapas will lead an orchestra of eleven through Humperdinck’s tune-filled score that includes enchanting folk melodies, plaintive dramatic passages, playful hexes, and the famously lush Abendsengen (Evening Prayer)

VIP tickets at $35, General Admission tickets at $20, and Youth (6-18 years) tickets at $10 are available on line at www.operalasvegas.com. Group sales (over 8 people) at $10 each are also available.

Soprano Casey Dakus (Gretel) and Mezzo-soprano Danielle Marcelle Bond (Hansel) will star in the title roles. Ms. Dakus is a Las Vegas native who is majoring in vocal performance at UNLV, where she appeared as Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni), Ophelia (Hamlet) and Euridice (Orfeo ed Euridice). For OLV, she performed Mrs. Sem in Noye’s Fludde (Noah’s Flood), and she is recreating her role as Gretel which she performed to great acclaim last season.

Ms. Bond is based in Los Angeles, and she has previously starred in OLV’s productions of Cinderella (the stepdaughter Tisbe) and Rigoletto (the vampish Maddalena). She is no stranger to the role of Hansel, a favorite she has performed before, and is having fun getting back into a “pants role” in which she impersonates a spunky young man.

On the other hand, the role of the Witch is often portrayed by a mezzo-soprano, but OLV is breaking with tradition and tenor Karsten Pudwill, having had audiences in stitches last year, will reprise this vocally demanding part of Rosina Daintymouth. Mr. Pudwill has appeared with Vegas City Opera as Frederick in Super Summer Theatre’s The Pirates of Penzance. He will once again trade in his sea legs for a wild ride on a magic broom.

Travis Lewis (Peter) and Ashley Stone (Gertrude) are the nattering parents who inadvertently allow their children to wander un-chaperoned in the ominous woods. Mr. Lewis last appeared with Opera Las Vegas as he opened the season in September in Sasha Matson’s Cooperstown, a Jazz Opera in Nine Innings, while Ms. Stone was Mrs. Noah for the company’s Noah’s Flood, and was recently featured with the Las Vegas Philharmonic in A Very Vegas Showcase.

Rounding out the cast are Denise Wunderlich (Sandman), an admired soprano soloist at Green Valley Presbyterian Church, and Athena Mertes (Dew Fairy), a lyric soprano well remembered as Gertrude Stein in OLV’s West Coast premiere of Ricky Ian Gordon and Royce Vavrek’s 27 last April.

Sohre also promises “the audience will be able to meet and greet the cast and creative team in the lobby after the performance to ask questions, provide critical reaction, or just stop by for a unique holiday photo-op. Opera Las Vegas is committed to our motto of ‘Celebrating Life’s Grandest Stories Onstage,’ and Hansel and Gretel is one of the grandest of all.”
