EMAV 10 Bites: Narée Asherian, Actor and Singer

Narée Asherian - Performer. Photo by Jilliene Michelle Photography .

In every neighborhood, there is someone who makes the Arts a part of their life, and our community. You'd be surprised to discover how many different people use the arts to improve the quality of life in our hometown. EAT MORE ART! VEGAS will feature them regularly in our series "10 Bites."

What kinds of art do you enjoy, create, or perform in?

I am an actor and singer first and foremost, but as someone that lives in a bakery (proud big sister shout-out to Painted Sugar Bakery), I can say wholeheartedly that I enjoy the culinary arts as well!

    Why do you do it?

Storytelling has always been my passion. I was lucky enough to grow up seeing live theatre, but I had never considered it to be a career choice until I saw "Amadeus" at LVLT my freshman year -- the incredible inspiration I left the theatre with that night made me want to share that feeling with people, and that's when I decided that I wanted to perform for the rest of my life.

What’s your favorite production/performance experience so far?

I'm guilty of always picking the show I'm currently working on! Maybe I'm biased, "Newsies" has been my favorite thing since 7th grade, and being able to perform in your favorite show with a STELLAR cast and crew is the definition of a dream come true! However, I did love my time at the immersive dinner theatre production of "A Christmas Carol" last year, and I absolutely adored doing "Scotland Road" at LVLT and "The Fantasticks" at the SST Playhouse as well!

What jobs have you done other than being an artist, or what do you do when you are "at work?"

My very first job was at a kids' online news channel as a reporter -- since then, I've joined the College of Southern Nevada's Alumni Services team, but my love for writing lead to another reporting gig with an online 3D printing magazine called All3DP!

What is an Arts experience that you will never forget or a memorable response to your work?

Oh gosh, there are so many! I love how the Fine Arts have the ability to inspire others to create, and hearing people's feedback on how art changes their lives is why I love doing this. I remember once a friend of mine came up to me after seeing me "The Fantasticks", and told me that our cast made her want to finish writing an original play she had started a while ago. That's stuck with me since then, knowing how much of a difference theatre makes on us young people -- I fully expect to be invited to opening night of that show when you finish, Angelina!

What would you be doing if you weren't performing, creating, or enjoying the Arts in Las Vegas?

A life without the Arts? No thanks! If I can't have it in my hometown, I suppose I'll just have to move -- I can't live without the excitement and joy that the Fine Arts brings!

Name something you love about Las Vegas, and why.

I was born and raised in Vegas, and there's just something about the community here that makes me so proud to call it home. And it's not just the Arts community -- it's the way we all come together to celebrate our successes and support each other in times of hardship. That's what makes this city so great.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

That's hard, I've been lucky enough to meet and befriend so many amazing people that have shared things that have changed me for the better. The "nothing to prove, only to share" mantra gets thrown around in almost every show I've done, it's a brilliant mentality. On a more personal level, I've been taught to simply be honest when performing, because that honesty will ensure that the story is told as best as it can be (major shout-out to Papa Glenn for that pearl of wisdom).

What superpower would you have and why?

The ability to talk to plants, so I could figure out why my aloe plant doesn't feel well right now...

Any future projects or events that you're looking forward to?

Playing Katherine in Disney's "Newsies" with Signature Productions! We will be performing April 2-27 (dark on Sundays, Mondays, and Tuesdays with matinees on Saturdays) at the Summerlin Library Performing Arts Center -- you can find information and tickets here: http://www.signatureproductions.net

EMAV 10 Bites: Angel Mendoza, Actor

In every neighborhood, there is someone who makes the Arts a part of their life, and our community. You'd be surprised to discover how many different people use the arts to improve the quality of life in our hometown. EAT MORE ART! VEGAS will feature them regularly in our series "10 Bites."

What kinds of art do you enjoy, create, or perform in?

Actor. Currently playing Juror 6 in 12 ANGRY MEN with Poor Richard's Players at The Arts Factory.

    Why do you do it?

I am a "people" person. When I research a character and figure out what it will be like, I feel like I connect with other human beings and society a little more. I find a few things here and there as in what makes us tick and I feel it gives me a better understanding on why we act the way we do.

What’s your favorite production/performance experience so far?

I love them all for different reasons but I have to say that my favorite is always the Next one. The process is a challenge and a great learning experience. Not only do I get to develop a character but I get to do it with other Actors Directors, Production Crews... And we bring this idea, this moment, this story to Life! We get to take the audience on a journey and that is a wonderful experience.

The cast of 12 Angry Men are all smiles!

What jobs have you done other than being an artist, or what do you do when you are "at work?"

So many! But to name a few: Boxing Instructor, Film Production [multiple departments], Retail Operations at a Cosmetics Store; yeah, I know a lot about fragrance and make up - don't know how to apply it though, haha!

What is an Arts experience that you will never forget or a memorable response to your work?

I have been told by audience members that they hated my some of my characters and loved others. So I guess I am doing it right, right?

What would you be doing if you weren't performing, creating, or enjoying the Arts in Las Vegas?

Probably teaching. I still Love Boxing and martial arts in general.

Name something you love about Las Vegas, and why.

The options. So many options! Food, for example. We may not have what Out-of-Towners call authentic but we have amazing quality in all types of food. That and the fusions and the variety - we are so spoiled!

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

I don't think I can pin point just one because over the years I hear or learn something that changes me. But I will mention a couple: 1) Believe In/Trust Yourself. 2) It is okay not to know.

What superpower would you have and why?

Easy - Fly! Every weekend I'd "Peter Pan" myself over to an Island I haven't been to!

Any future projects or events that you're looking forward to?

Twelve Angry Men runs through 3/24/2019

Thursdays, Friday, and Saturdays @ 8pm, Sundays at 2pm

EMAV 10 Bites: Amir Hamed, POI Artist

    Updated: Mar 7, 2019

In every neighborhood, there is someone who makes the Arts a part of their life, and our community. You'd be surprised to discover how many different people use the arts to improve the quality of life in our hometown. EAT MORE ART! VEGAS will feature them regularly in our series "10 Bites."

What kinds of art do you enjoy, create, or perform in?

I enjoy and appreciate all art forms. I partake in what is called flow art. To be more specific I handle POI and firmly have a deep passion for it.

Editor's note: "Poi" refers to a style of performing art originated by the Māori people of New Zealand involving swinging tethered weights through a variety of patterns. Poi artists may also sing or dance while swinging their poi made from various materials (including fire). The expansion of "POI culture" in many countries has led to an evolution of styles and tools used.

    Why do you do it?

I do it because it allows me to create a visual representation that’s beautiful for everyone. Within my own self it creates a place of pure solace.

What’s your favorite production/performance experience so far?

My favorite performance experience is me simply flowing for anyone.

    @anarchy_flow777 #kandimask #skatepark

What jobs have you done other than being an artist, or what do you do when you are "at work?"

I am a solar consultant, I have been in the Marine Corps, I have worked on business for years as well.

What is an Arts experience that you will never forget or a memorable response to your work?

I will never forget the time someone stopped me while I was flowing in a bar. They looked me in the eyes and told me I should be in Hawaii glowing fire. She was native to the idea of the dance that POI is and she recognized it instantaneously.

What would you be doing if you weren't performing, creating, or enjoying the Arts in Las Vegas?

I would continue to do what I do everyday, go to work.

Name something you love about Las Vegas, and why.

I love the people. Everyone is so unique in contributing to the form build of this city.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

Life is all about sacrifices in doing what you love the most.

What superpower would you have and why?

I would love to read minds so I could help people express how they feel properly.

Any future projects or events that you're looking forward to?

I’m looking forward to collaborating with different flow artists. Hopefully soon you can catch me as an EDC performer!
