EMAV 10 Bites: Nicole Holbrook, Performer

Updated: Mar 9, 2019

In every neighborhood, there is someone who makes the Arts a part of their life, and our community. You'd be surprised to discover how many different people use the arts to improve the quality of life in our hometown. EAT MORE ART! VEGAS will feature them regularly in our series "10 Bites."

What performing art do you do?

Theatre productions

Why do you do it?

I love telling stories and learning about other people and characters by walking in their shoes. I feel theatre can be such an inspiring, uplifting, and edifying medium for ourselves and our communities.

What’s your favorite production/performance so far?

It's a Wonderful Life as Mary with Stageworks theatre in Houston, and of course, A Christmas Carol this winter at NCT.

What jobs have you done other than being an artist?

I am a nurse, a tap dance and violin and voice teacher, a choir director, a choreographer, and I have been a space camp counselor.

What memorable responses have you had to your work?

One of my favorites was during a production of Emma. I played miss Bates, and many of the audience members would say, "Oh! I thought you were a spry old woman." During the production of It's a Wonderful Life, audience members would ask myself and the actor playing George if we were dating in real life (we're both taken) because they felt the love between the characters. "It was so real!" I think those comments revealed for me how much our work on stage affected them, and I love knowing they felt something and got caught up in the story.

What would you be doing if you weren't performing your art?

I have no idea! I love this!

Name something you love about Las Vegas, and why.

I love the diversity. The people are loving and accepting.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

To be compassionate.

What superpower would you have and why?

I would fly. It's so freeing, and in my dreams I often can fly - I would love it to be real.

Any future projects?

So far, I just have my schooling on the horizon, but we'll see. I can't stay off of the stage for long.

Are you a local artist of any discipline? Do you work with a company as a designer, stagehand or administrative staff? We'd love to get your 10 Bites to share. Fill out a form here, and you might be featured in a post!
