A Public Fit Theatre Company (APF) is thrilled to announce the 11th Season of plays and staged readings!
SEPTEMBER: Native Gardens by Karen Zacarias. A staged reading directed by Gigi Guizado
New homeowners Pablo - a high-powered lawyer - and his very pregnant wife Tania are finally realizing the American Dream: a house in the suburbs next door to the Butleys. But a minor dispute over a long-established fence line threatens to explode into all-out war in this hilarious story of class, privilege, and botanical taste. With wit and charm, Zacarias’ thought-provoking comedy explores the complexities of identity and belonging, challenging audiences to reflect upon the boundaries that divide us, both real and imaginary. Presented in partnership with the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District.
OCTOBER: The Minutes by Tracy Letts. Directed by Ann-Marie Pereth and Joseph Kucan
A local council meeting in the small town of Big Cherry goes off the rails in this darkly comedic look at the American perspective on government, history, privilege, and power. Nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in 2022, Letts’ hilarious examination of the tribal nature of our national experiment provides the theatrical jolt you’ll need during this year’s election season!
JANUARY: Silent Sky by Lauren Gunderson. A staged reading directed by Tracey Corea
The captivating true story of 19th-century astronomer Henrietta Leavitt, whose groundbreaking discoveries revolutionized our understanding of the universe - before women had even secured the right to vote! Marked by Gunderson’s inimitable wit and keen sense of history, Silent Sky is a poignant and empowering tale of perseverance, discovery, and the indomitable spirit of the human quest for understanding. Presented in partnership with the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District
FEBRUARY: A Case for the Existence of God by Samuel D. Hunter. Directed by Jake Staley
Ensconced in a tiny cubicle in a small office in southern Idaho, two strangers become fast friends as they struggle to reconcile the confounding terms of a life-altering mortgage loan. Thoughtful and meditative, Hunter’s extraordinary two-hander is as intimate as it is expansive, teeming with humor, empathy, and heart-rending honesty.
MARCH: NSFW by Lucy Kirkwood. A staged reading directed by Nicole Unger
A razor-sharp comedy about power, publishing, and the commodifying portrayal of women in the media, NSFW (a website acronym for “not safe for work”) follows the intersecting lives of 3 employees of a faltering men’s magazine facing the harsh economic realities of the 21st Century. When a fatal blunder in the latest issue is revealed, the staff must band together to navigate the murky waters of sexism, ambition, and amoral corporate culture in order to survive the backlash. Wildly provocative and uninhibitedly challenging, Kirkwood fearlessly explores the nature of the industry, forcing audiences to confront their own attitudes towards gender, power, and representation in the relentless pursuit of commercial success. Presented in partnership with the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District.
APRIL: References to Salvador Dalí Make Me Hot by José Rivera, Directed by Gigi Guizado
In the dusty backyard of her house in Barstow, California, Gabriela waits for her soldier husband to return from war. Grappling with loneliness and desire, her vivid imagination weaves together dreams, memories, and fantasy while the Moon plays the violin and sings to the Cat and Coyote. Rivera’s iconic work of magical realism is a poetic masterpiece, inviting audiences into a world where reality and fantasy blur, challenging our perceptions of love, identity, and the pursuit of happiness in an unpredictable world.
JUNE: The Cold Buffet by Elijah Young. A staged reading directed by Andrew Calvert
Things are never easy when the McCarthy family gets together: five years, three major life events, one buffet line. Young’s fresh new comedy embraces the ever-changing dynamics of a modern-age family - the life-long grudges, shifting attitudes, and loving acceptance. Laced with dry humor and a healthy dose of generational conflict, The Cold Buffet is a witty reminder that mealtimes can be minefields. Presented in partnership with the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District.
