EMA REVIEW: Dracula-la-la: A Musical With Bite

Ghoulishly-Delicious Fun for All

By L.A. Walker

Audiences were in for a treat when Winchester Dondero Cultural Center presented the award-winning musical Dracula-La-La: A Musical With Bite Oct. 4-5. The opening sets the audience up for the spookiness ahead. However, nothing can truly prepare attendees for the zany moments launched with impeccable timing that evoke undeniable laughter, often followed by little snorts.

This award-winning musical was written by Jay Nagle and his late partner, Dwayne Parks, who together lay claim to over twenty original musicals, many of which have received numerous awards. By the end of Scene 1, it’s clear why Dracula-la-la was one of those honored works.

The perfectly selected cast delivered this clever combination of song, dance, and story with vibrant energy. Each member contributed to the collective brilliance of the show, making it difficult to single out just one moment. However, special recognition goes to Andrew Ribaudo, who brought Count Drayno to life with fluid vocal control, and Beau Geurts, who infused Birdwatcher Johnnie with a refreshing vibrancy that suggests a bright future on stage or screen.

Yet, the real magic of Dracula-la-la lies in the ensemble’s ability to balance the spooky and the silly. From well-timed choreography to the intricate set design, every detail enhances the experience. The costumes collaborated with the script, adding to the mystique and elevating the production to Broadway-worthy standards.

Under the direction of writer Jay Nagle and co-producer Patrick Powell of Tiny Giraffe Productions, Dracula-la-la was a hit. Its unique blend of humor and haunt makes it a must-see for anyone looking for a ghoulishly good time. Watch for future dates.

Place the producer’s documentary preview of “Here’s Looking At You, KIDS,” a conversation about growing up on the Silver Screen, on your calendar on December 18 and 19 at The Winchester Dondero Cultural Center.
