    Updated: Mar 8, 2019

The Asylum Theatre, in partnership with Cockroach Theatre Company and The Grief Dialogues Foundation, will commemorate the first anniversary of 1 October with an evening of theatre and guided conversation about life after loss.

The performance of short plays, in collaboration with local performing artists from across the community, will take place Wednesday, September 26th at the Art Square Theatre, to be followed by a supportive conversation on the general topic of grief led by specialist Dr. Robyn Donaldson.

General admission tickets are available for $20 (plus a $2 service fee) at cockroachtheatre.com.

    Wednesday, September 26th - 8PM

    Cockroach Theatre:

    1025 S 1st St Ste 110, Las Vegas, Nevada

    Tickets: $20 | Call 702-222-9661

    #VegasStrong #Route91 #GriefDialogues #EatMoreArt

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Vegas Strong Resiliency Center, a place of healing and support dedicated to serving as a resource and referral center for residents, visitors and responders affected by the shooting at the Route 91 Harvest Festival. vegasstrongrc.org

The performance will be directed by Sarah O’Connell, Artistic Director of The Asylum Theatre, and Cockroach Theatre and the Grief Dialogues are co-producers..

“We believe that out of grief comes art.TM” Elizabeth Coplan, The Grief Dialogues

For two years, the Seattle-based Grief Dialogues worked with playwrights around the country to bring just the right mix of works for production. From 180 submissions, The Grief Dialogues Advisory Council, on which Asylum Artistic Director Sarah O’Connell served, evaluated 80 semi- finalists based on their adherence to the mission of erasing the stigma around dying, death and grief, and the play's ability to engage a diverse audience. 20 short plays were selected for the final “library” to choose from when presenting each performance. FUSION by Las Vegas playwright, Paul Atreides, was among the final selections.

“Art saves us when words fail us, and the local Las Vegas performing arts community wanted to offer the tools that Theatre provides for us to help cope with the toughest parts of life.

These new plays are an empathetic way to honor the first anniversary of VegasStrong but they are reflections on all kinds of loss, love and life moving forward. I believe that everyone will find a story that echoes their own experience among the collection. We are grateful to Dr. Donaldson for offering her professional expertise to help lead the conversation.

Cockroach Theatre is a special place, right next to the Las Vegas Healing Garden which many local artists, along with their friends and neighbors across the Las Vegas Valley, helped to create, working together as one family.” - Sarah O’Connell, The Asylum Theatre

The Asylum gathered 12 performers to collaborate who frequently appear with local companies including: Cockroach Theatre Company, A Public Fit, Majestic Repertory Theatre, Las Vegas Little Theatre and Nevada Conservatory Theatre. The Las Vegas production will also include a selection from the book Vegas Strong, an anthology of short stories by local authors who donate 100% of the proceeds from its sale to support for First Responders.

EMAV 10 Bites: Rob McCoy, CEO at the Neon Museum

    Updated: Mar 9, 2019

In every neighborhood, there is someone who makes the Arts a part of their life, and our community. You'd be surprised to discover how many different people use the arts to improve the quality of life in or hometown. EAT MORE ART! VEGAS will feature them regularly in our series "10 Bites."

What performing art do you do?

CEO at the Neon Museum, a nonprofit organization dedicated to collecting, preserving, studying and exhibiting iconic Las Vegas signs for educational, historic, arts and cultural enrichment.

    Why do you do it?

As a native Las Vegan , leading the Neon Museum is a great way for me to give back to the city I love and to preserve our history for future generations. As a native Las Vegan (family has been here since 1939), issues concerning quality of life and sustainability drive my community commitments, both professionally and personally. In addition to chairing Neon Museum’s Board of Trustees for two years and serving as a board member for seven years prior, I've also served on the boards of The Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Nevada, Metro Chamber of Commerce and the Nevada Taxpayers Association.

What’s your favorite production/performance so far?

My favorite has yet to premiere. But beginning in early November, look for a dazzling new experience in the Museum’s North Gallery. It will be innovative, illuminating and immersive -- and a first in the United States!

What jobs have you done other than being an artist?

I was the first native born Anchor/Reporter in Las Vegas at KORK/KVBC TV. My corporate career followed, primarily in the area of media relations, advertising, branding and public policy. I came to the museum following an 18-year career at CenturyLink, as associate vice president of government affairs and community development.

What memorable responses have you had to your work?

Dulcinea Rongavilla, incoming chair of the Neon Museum Board of Trustees, has said that, “Rob's passion for the Neon Museum, Las Vegas history and this community inspires everyone he meets. He is uniquely equipped to guide the museum as it builds upon its past successes and prepares to reach ever larger numbers of art, architecture, history and culture enthusiasts from around the globe.”

What would you be doing if you weren't in your current field?

    Landscape Architect.

Name something you love about Las Vegas, and why.

The burgeoning arts & culture community. It didn’t exist when I was a kid. My children and grandchildren will be the better for it! I’ve seen downtown Las Vegas thrive, die and now revive. All in my lifetime. Incredible.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

Every job worth doing…. is worth doing well (thanks Dad)!

What superpower would you have and why?

Mind reader. It would save immeasurable amounts of time.

    Any future projects?

See answer #3. Trust me. You won’t want to miss this!

EMAV 10 Bites: Gigi Guizado, Translator and performer of plays

    Updated: Mar 9, 2019

In every neighborhood, there is someone who makes the Arts a part of their life, and our community. You'd be surprised to discover how many different people use the arts to improve the quality of life in or hometown. EAT MORE ART! VEGAS will feature them regularly in our series "10 Bites."

What performing art do you do?

I translate plays from Spanish to English, and act on stage and screen.

    Why do you do it?

I translate because the research and cross-cultural exchange of it fascinates me. I act because the story compels me to find resonance between the text, human nature, my own life experience, and the audience.

What’s your favorite production/performance so far?

Out of the Wings Festival 2017 in London, UK where my translation and adaption, Symphony for Six Actors by Rafael Guizado, was presented was a highlight for sure. https://ootwfestival.com

What jobs have you done other than being an artist?

My work as a Standardized Patient Educator brought me to Las Vegas seven years ago to start a program at the Clinical Simulation Center of Las Vegas. https://csclv.nevada.edu I've also worked as a temporary receptionist and administrative assistant.

What memorable responses have you had to your work?

I continue to be amazed by the response to I'm in Love with a Church Girl from fans as far away as Nigeria. Once a man tweeted me to say he'd been moved to tears and that the world needs more movies like this. www.imdb.com/title/tt1618432/

What would you be doing if you weren't performing?

    If I weren't performing, I'd be writing.

Name something you love about Las Vegas, and why.

I love Las Vegas' spirit of independence and innovation.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

Do unto others as you'd have them do unto you.

What superpower would you have and why?

I'd want the power to stop time, or expand time, so I could fit in more creative projects.

    Any future projects?

Yes! I'll be playing Victoria in The Motherf**ker with the Hat at LVLT Black Box, November 3rd - 19th. www.LVLT.org
