The Woman in Black is a ghost story. Set largely in and around the far-flung, foggy marshes of northern England, it’s a tale of loss, revenge, and increasingly eerie encounters with otherworldly spirits. The framing device is that an older gentleman, Arthur Kipps, hires an Actor to help him tell the story of how, as a younger man, he had several terrifying encounters with the ghost of the title. Most of the play is told through flashback, as the two men take on several roles to tell the story.
